The segregation and discrimination against coloured/black people in pre-1990 South Africa was extreme. I remember hearing about it in the news and then later hearing it in person from South Africans who immigrated to Australia, some of them via New Zealand. Their experiences growing up in SA (and by that I mean abuse and trauma) was something they carried with them into adulthood.
